The Cracks We Hide

the cracks we hide

Some wounds announce themselves.

Others learn to disappear.

Not because they have healed...

but because we have become skilled at carrying them.

We smile.

We answer, "I'm fine."

We keep showing up.

Over time, people stop asking.

Not because they no longer care.

But because we have become convincing.

There is an unspoken expectation that strength should look effortless.

That resilience should leave no trace.

That survival should resemble wholeness.

But nothing in nature survives unchanged.

Trees carry storms in their rings.

Stone remembers every season that shaped it.

Rivers carve their stories into the earth one quiet day at a time.

Why should we believe people are any different?

Perhaps the most honest version of us is not the one without cracks...

but the one willing to stop hiding them.

Not every fracture needs to be repaired immediately.

Some simply need to be acknowledged.

Seen.

Named.

Because what remains hidden often continues shaping us long after we pretend it no longer exists.

We spend so much of life trying to appear untouched.

As if untouched were the goal.

Maybe it isn't.

Maybe wisdom does not arrive polished.

Maybe compassion is born in places that first had to break.

Maybe the cracks we hide are not proof that we failed...

but evidence that we kept living.

There is quiet courage in allowing yourself to be seen as unfinished.

Not because brokenness is beautiful.

But because pretending never was.

History leaves its marks on nations.

Life leaves its marks on people.

Neither should be forgotten.
