The Door We Avoid

We spend much of our lives looking for the
next door.
The next opportunity.
The next chapter.
Certain that what we're searching for must
exist somewhere beyond where we are.
But there is one door we rarely choose.
The one that opens inward.
Not because it's hidden.
Because we know it asks something of us.
Inside, there is no audience.
No role to perform.
No expectations to satisfy.
Only the person we've been too busy to meet.
At first, the silence feels unfamiliar.
We reach for distraction.
Another task.
Another notification.
Another reason to keep moving.
Yet what waits behind that door has never been empty.
It is the grief we postponed.
The dream we quietly set aside.
The questions we've learned to outwork instead of answer.
Perhaps that is why we avoid it.
Not because nothing is there.
Because something is.
Something honest.
Something unfinished.
Something still alive.
Maybe the life we've been searching for was never waiting somewhere else.
Maybe it has been waiting...
just beyond the door we've been unwilling to open.
