When the Ground Gives Way

There comes a moment
when what once held us...
doesn't.
Not because we failed.
Because life changed.
A relationship.
A calling.
A role we built our days around.
We keep reaching for what used to give life,
believing that enough effort
can restore what has already shifted.
But not everything is meant
to be carried forever.
Some chapters end
long before we're ready
to admit they've ended.
So we stay.
Not because there is still life there.
Because there once was.
Perhaps the hardest part
isn't letting go.
It's accepting
that holding on
cannot bring something back
to what it used to be.
Maybe wisdom isn't found
in carrying more.
Maybe it's found
in recognizing
when it's time
to walk forward.
Sometimes the ground gives way...
not to destroy us,
but to loosen our grip
on what can no longer sustain us.
